Olympic legend Simone Biles has finally opened up about the heated debate with former NCAA swimmer Riley Gaines. The feud fueled itself earlier this summer when Gaines criticized the inclusion of a 17-year-old transwoman in women’s sport, sparking a series of reactions across the sporting community.
Biles, both beloved for her sporting life and active activism behavior, joined the fight and felt it personal. That switch attracted backlash and motivated the gymnast to express her position publicly.
A balance between fairness and inclusion for Biles
Stepping away from social media, Biles confronted the issue directly:
“I’ve always believed competitive equity & inclusivity are both essential in sport. The current system doesn’t adequately balance these important principles, which often leads to frustration and heated exchanges, and it didn’t help for me to get personal with Riley, for which I apologize.”
Her statement recognized the intensity of the exchange with a big nod to the fact that the ways we confront some kind of conversations is super important. She confessed she does not know everything, but maintained and pointed out that any resolution starts with empathy and respect.

Shortly thereafter, Biles posted an Instagram Story with a sweater featuring the words: “RACISM IS NOT AN OPINION.”
The post carried a broader message about discrimination in life and athletics, something Biles has already addressed many times, particularly when it involves athletes of color being discriminated against.
