Graziano wheezed, “Miss Maroni… get back. ”
“Shut up and hold still. ” She ripped off her scarf, pressed it against the arterial bleed near his collarbone.

Leo dropped his empty magazine, slammed in a fresh one. “They’re falling back. ”
Police sirens wailed in the distance. The remaining Costa men fled.
Leo ran to the planter. “Can you walk? ”
“SUV. Fifty feet north.
” Graziano tossed the keys. They dragged him to the armored vehicle. Kate kept pressure on the wound. Leo jumped in the driver’s seat, tore out onto Lower Wacker Drive just as squad cars arrived above.
In the underground tunnel, the silence was suffocating. Kate’s hands were covered in blood. She stared at the back of Leo’s head. “Miss Maroni,” she whispered.
She looked at Graziano. “Who is my father? ”
Graziano leaned his head against the window. “Dominic Maroni.
Head of the Chicago Outfit. Your mother made him swear to keep you out of the life. I’ve been watching you since kindergarten. ”
Kate felt the ground drop out.
Her entire life—the student loans, the struggling, the grief—all a curated existence. She was the heiress to an empire of violence. She met Leo’s eyes in the rearview mirror. “And you?
Were you watching me since kindergarten too? ”
“No. I work for the Costa family. I was supposed to get close to you.
Find vulnerabilities. Vincent Costa found out about you through a dirty cop. He was coming tonight to kidnap you. ”
Kate recoiled.
The quiet boy who brought her coffee was a spy. “I lied,” Leo said. “But I didn’t let them take you. I threw my life away to protect you.
”
“Pull over. ”
“Kate, we aren’t safe. ”
“Pull over. ”
He slammed the brakes in an abandoned loading bay.
He turned, expecting her to run. Instead, she looked at the blood on her hands. The innocence was dead. She thought of her mother’s lies.
She wasn’t Kate Hayes anymore. She was a Maroni. “You know how Costa operates,” she said, her voice hardening. “His routes, his safe houses.
”
Leo nodded. “Take us to my father. ”
The Maroni estate in Lake Forest was a stone fortress. Ten minutes later, Kate stood in a mahogany-paneled study.
Dominic Maroni sat behind a massive desk, silver hair, radiating power. “Kate,” he rasped. “Don’t. ” She held up a bloodstained hand.
“My mother is dead. You left us alone. Tonight I was almost kidnapped by Vincent Costa. The illusion is over.
”
Dominic’s eyes flared with rage. He glared at Leo. “Why is he breathing in my house? ”
“Because he saved my life.
And because we’re going to use him to end the Costa family. Tonight. ”
Dominic studied her. The college girl had burned away.
In her place stood someone with his blood and a terrifying calm. Leo spoke up. “Vincent Costa operates out of a meatpacking plant, but he sleeps at a penthouse downtown. He uses an underground private garage.
I know his transit schedule. ”
“I don’t trust a rat,” Dominic spat. “You don’t have to trust him,” Kate said. “You have to trust me.
Costa thinks I’m a soft target. So we give him exactly what he wants. ”
Dominic went pale. “Absolutely not.
”
“I’m already in the crosshairs. The only way to remove the target from my back is to remove the man who painted it there. ”
For two hours, the study became a war room. Kate mapped out the strategy with methodical logic.
Leo provided the tactical intelligence. The numbers runner and the nursing student orchestrated the downfall of Chicago’s second-largest crime syndicate. At 3 a. m.
, the plan went into motion. Kate sat in the back of a decoy Lincoln Town Car, a Kevlar vest under a designer trench coat. Leo rode shotgun with an M4 carbine across his lap. They parked in a desolate alley near Fulton Market.
Leo dialed Costa’s private line. “Vincent. I have the girl. Graziano went crazy—I grabbed her in the chaos.
I’m pinned down three blocks from the plant. Maroni’s guys are sweeping. I need extraction now. ”
Greed overrode paranoia.
“Keep her head down. I’m coming out myself. ”
The line went dead. Kate’s heart pounded.
“He bought it. ”
Leo racked the charging handle. “Whatever happens next, Kate—I’m not sorry I met you. ”
She reached forward, gripping his shoulder.
“We finish this together. ”
Minutes later, a convoy of four SUVs roared out of the meatpacking plant. As they turned onto the deserted street, a garbage truck reversed out of a side street, T-boning the lead SUV. Maroni’s tactical teams opened fire from rooftops and fire escapes.
It wasn’t a battle. It was an execution. Kate watched through the tinted windows as Costa’s empire was dismantled in under three minutes. When the smoke cleared, Dominic Maroni walked to the wreckage to ensure it was done.
The war was over before the city woke up. A week later, Kate stood on a balcony overlooking Lake Michigan. She wore a tailored black suit. Her nursing textbooks were packed away.
She had deferred the semester. Leo stepped out beside her, wearing a matching dark suit. He answered only to her now. “Your father called,” he said.
“Alderman Davis signed off on the port zoning changes. Costa’s territories are fully absorbed. You have complete control of the logistics division. ”
“Good.
” She took a sip of bourbon. “And the library? ”
“Bought and paid for in cash. Endowed in your mother’s name.
”
Kate smiled, a genuine warmth that had hardened into something unbreakable. She reached out, her fingers lacing through his. She wasn’t just the mafia boss’s daughter anymore. She was the boss in training.
And she finally had someone she could sit with.
