“Mom’s done with you,” Nathaniel said. “She’s been done for a while. You didn’t just lose her. You lost us.
You lost me. You didn’t see us for who we were. You only saw yourself. ”
Marcus wanted to defend himself, to explain his ambition, his ego, his blindness.
But he couldn’t. He knew his son was right. “I was wrong,” he said, his voice barely a whisper. Nathaniel stood up, his back straight.
“I’m leaving, Dad. I’m going to stay with Mom. I don’t think you’ll ever get it, but I hope you do before it’s too late. ”
He walked out of the room.
Marcus remained seated, the weight of his failures settling over him like a blanket he couldn’t shake off. He had lost everything. And the worst part was, he knew he would never be able to get it back.
