You’ll rot in debt for the rest of your miserable life. ”
Daisy didn’t flinch. She turned to the Sheikh. “Mr.

Spencer is currently threatening to destroy my life. He is terrified you will realize that Vanguard’s fourth-quarter liquidity is tied entirely to a shell corporation in the British Virgin Islands heavily laden with toxic, unrecoverable debt. ”
The Sheikh leaned back and began to laugh—a deep, resonant sound of genuine amusement. Roland stopped yelling.
“Your Excellency,” Roland choked out. “It’s a misunderstanding. This girl is insane. ”
The Sheikh’s laughter stopped.
His expression turned glacial. He picked up his napkin, wiped his water glass, and placed it precisely on the table. “That will not be necessary, Mr. Spencer.
”
Roland froze. The words had been spoken in perfect, unaccented, Oxford-educated English. “I hold a master’s degree in global macroeconomics from the London School of Economics and a doctorate in international law from Oxford,” the Sheikh said, his tone conversational but lethal. “So yes, I speak English.
I also speak French, Mandarin, and Urdu. But most importantly tonight, I speak the language of arrogant, deceitful men. ”
Roland’s face drained of color. “Every word,” the Sheikh continued, standing up, “every whispered insult—‘he’s just a checkbook in a thobe,’ ‘pulling money out of the sand’—I heard it all.
I knew about the toxic debt in your Cayman subsidiaries before my jet landed. I came here to look the man who tried to defraud my people in the eye. ”
The door burst open. Richard, the floor manager, rushed in with two security guards.
He glared at Daisy. “You are fired. Escort her off the premises. ”
One guard reached for Daisy’s arm.
“Take your hand off her,” a voice barked. Youssef stepped through the doorway, no longer holding a notepad but a leather briefcase. He walked to the Sheikh’s side, his demeanor now sharp and commanding. “Do not touch her,” the Sheikh said.
“If any of your staff lays a finger on this young woman, I will purchase this entire hotel by sunrise and have you all removed by the NYPD. ”
The guard dropped his hands. “Yousef is not my interpreter,” the Sheikh explained, looking at Roland. “He is the chief legal counsel for our sovereign wealth fund.
He stepped outside to conference with the Securities and Exchange Commission. ”
Spencer whimpered. David looked like he was about to vomit. “Attempting to knowingly sell severely compromised debt as a tier-one infrastructure asset crosses into federal wire fraud,” Yousef said, opening his briefcase.
“We have forwarded all of Vanguard’s internal emails to the regulatory authorities. ”
Roland whispered, “You set me up. ”
“No,” the Sheikh said softly. “You ruined yourself.
You underestimated everyone in this room. You underestimated me because of my attire and my culture. And you underestimated this brilliant young woman because she was wearing an apron. ”
He turned his back on the ruined executives and walked to Daisy.
“You stepped into the line of fire with nothing to gain. Why? ”
Daisy took a breath. “Because I spent four years watching corrupt men steal from the vulnerable.
I promised myself I would never stand silently while men like Roland Spencer lied to line their pockets. A uniform does not strip a person of their integrity. ”
The Sheikh smiled warmly. He reached inside his kandura and withdrew a heavy gold business card.
He held it out. “I have a philanthropic division that handles global crisis relief. We need a director of international compliance and negotiation. Someone who cannot be intimidated.
The position comes with an eight-figure operational budget, a seven-figure salary, and comprehensive global medical coverage for your family. My jet departs for Geneva at seven tomorrow morning. ”
Daisy stared at the card. She reached behind her back, found the knot of her apron, and pulled.
The starched white fabric fell to the floor. “I will be there, Your Excellency. I prefer my tea with one sugar during flights. ”
The Sheikh chuckled.
“Youssef, make a note. ”
“Already done, sir. ”
Without another word, Sheikh Tarik Al Qassimi and Yousef walked out of the Astor Suite. Daisy stood there.
She looked at Richard, his jaw unhinged. She looked at Spencer and David, staring blankly at the wall. She looked at Roland Spencer, his eyes red with terrified tears. “Please,” he whispered.
Daisy offered him the cold, professional stare she used to reserve for corrupt warlords. “You should really read the footnotes, Mr. Spencer.
”
She turned and walked out of the heavy mahogany doors, leaving the ruins of Vanguard Pinnacle behind her, stepping out of the shadows and into the light.
