The room shifted. The investors leaned in. They saw the force behind her words. When the meeting ended, Vanessa smiled.
“You did it. ”
Nia smiled back. “This is just the beginning. ”
That evening, as she stepped into her car, her phone rang.
Kofi’s name on the screen. She answered. “Nia, I know you must hate me. ”
His voice was desperate, shaking.
The man who had thought he could break her was now begging. “I don’t hate you, Kofi,” she said calmly. “But I’m done. I’m done trying to fix what you broke.
”
“Please, I made a mistake. I want to make things right. ”
“It’s too late. You should have thought about that before you made me invisible in my own life.
There’s nothing left to fix. ”
She hung up. She drove through the streets of Atlanta, the city lights blurring past. She didn’t need his apology.
