Jaylen Brown shoots a stunning three-pointer to save the Celtics as Boston defeats Indiana in overtime to win Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

In Game 1 of the Eastern Conference playoffs, Jaylen Brown’s last-second three-pointer saved the Celtics and forced overtime against the Indiana Pacers. Boston eventually won the game.

Jayson Tatum scored 36 points, including 10 in overtime, as the Celtics rallied late to win 133-128 at TD Garden.

Jrue Holiday scored a season-high 28 points, while Brown finished with 26 on an exciting night in Boston.

Tyrese Haliburton had 25 points and 10 assists for the Pacers, who made 13 three-pointers and scored 56 points in the paint against a Celtics squad that is still without big man Kristaps Porzingis.

However, Boston stepped up its defense, finishing with 11 steals, three each from Brown, Tatum, and Holiday. The Celtics made history in the NBA playoffs by having three players score 25 points and steal three times in a single game.

Tyrese Haliburton had 25 points and 10 assists for the Pacers but it wasn’t enough as they lost

‘We keep talking about protecting home court,’ Celtics forward Al Horford said. ‘It’s whatever it takes.’

Pascal Siakam added 24 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana. Myles Turner finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds for the sixth-seeded Pacers, who twice turned it over with a three-point lead in the final 30 seconds of regulation.

Brown made them pay for the second one, hitting a devastating three from the corner with Siakam right in his face to tie it at 117-117.

Speaking about the remarkable play – that saw him jump, off-balanced, into the air in front of a stunned Pacers bench – Brown said: ‘Before the inbounds, I was just talking to myself, “if I get this shot, it’s going in”.

‘I was just telling myself the whole time, “if you get it, it’s going up, and it’s going in.”‘

Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said the loss was ‘totally on me’ for not calling a timeout to advance the ball before their turnover that set up Brown’s shot.

Asked about the 21 turnovers Indiana committed, Haliburton said many of them were preventable.

‘I think it’s more on us,’ he said. ‘I just felt like more of them were probably on us than them forcing turnovers.’

The Celtics are now 2-2 when their opponent scores 100 or more points.

Celtics guard Jrue Holiday goes up for a shot against T.J. McConnell and Haliburton

Jayson Tatum dominated in overtime and ultimately led the Celtics to a Game 1 victory

‘I think we always knew that there’s always a chance. We’ve seen crazy stuff happen all the time,’ Holiday said.

‘I don’t think that we think we lost the game until we actually lost the game and that’s part of the reason why we were so resilient.’

Indiana went back ahead 123-121 when Haliburton hit all three free throws after being fouled with 1:46 remaining.

Tatum subsequently attempted a layup and was fouled by T.J. McConnell. He converted the three-point play, putting Boston ahead for good.

The Pacers turned it over again, this time to Haliburton. The ball made its way to Tatum at the top of the key. With 43 seconds left, he pumped, sidestepped a defender, and sank a three-pointer, making it 127-123.

Derrick White and Siakam swapped layups. Holiday was fouled and converted two free throws, giving Boston a 131-125 lead.

‘It’s disappointing that we accomplished so many nice things in this game and it came down to a handful of blunders at the end, but it’s the NBA playoffs,’ Carlisle stated. “We must learn from this experience and move forward.”
