Jason Aldean denies releasing ‘pro-lynching song’ after being accused of writing ode to sundown towns

Jason Aldean took to Twitter to shield himself against the online entertainment ruckus following the arrival of the video for his tune “Attempt That In a Humble community.”

The video contains numerous clasps of dissidents conflicting with police and inviting individuals who may “revile the police” or “spit in the face” or “step on the banner and consume it” to “attempt it in a modest community ” and “perceive how far you get out and about.

“I have a firearm that my granddad gave me,” the following sentence starts.

“Around here we take care of our own,” he sings in the chorus. “You cross that line it won’t take long.”

Aldean, who was present at the mass shooting at the Route 91 music festival in Las Vegas in 2017, has been taken to task for the imagery, tone and suggestion of gun violence in the video as well as racial overtones.

— Jason Aldean (@Jason_Aldean) July 18, 2023“In the past 24 hours I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests,” Aldean wrote to begin the lengthy post. “These references are not only meritless, but dangerous. There is not a single lyric in the song that references race or points to it — and that isn’t a single video clip that isn’t real news footage — and while I can try and respect others to have their own interpretation of a song with music — this one goes too far.”

That’s when Aldean addressed the mass shooting in Las Vegas.

“As many pointed out, I was present at Route 91 — where so many lost their lives — and our community recently suffered another heartbreaking tragedy,” he wrote. “NO ONE, including me, wants to continue to see senseless headlines or families ripped apart.”

He then tried to explain what the song meant to him.

“Try That In A Small Town, for me, refers to the feeling of a community that I had growing up, where we took care of our neighbors, regardless of differences of background or believe,” Aldean wrote. “Because they were our neighbors, and that was above any differences. My political views have never been something I’ve hidden from, and I know that a lot of us in this County don’t agree on how we get back to a sense of normalcy where we go at least a day without a headline that keeps us up at night. But the desire for it to — that’s what this song is about.”

CMT reportedly pulled the song from its airwaves following the backlash, and not everyone was buying Aldean’s explanation.

.@Jason_Aldean I’m from a small town. Even people in small towns are sick of violence. There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence. You should know that better than anyone having survived a mass shooting. This is not American or small town-like. It’s just lame https://t.co/cuOtUO9xjr

Musician Sheryl Crow was one of the people out front, taking Aldean to task.

“I’m from a small town,” she tweeted at Aldean. “Even people in small towns are sick of violence. There’s nothing small-town or American about promoting violence. You should know better than anyone having survived a mass shooting. This is not American or small-town like. It’s just lame.”

Crow wasn’t the only person that found Aldean’s video disturbing and his explanation lacking.

“Translation: Jason Aldean simply wants to return to a time in America when ‘good old boys’ could shoot or beat the (expletive) out of people who they didn’t think belonged in their town,” Shannon Watts, the founder of Moms Demand Action, responded. “Also, this song is two months old now far past the legal song judgement period. Good day.”

This song is an ode to a sundown town, suggesting people be beaten or shot for expressing free speech. It also insinuates that guns are being confiscated, the penalty for which is apparently death. Aldean was on stage when 60 of his fans were shot to death and 400+ were wounded. https://t.co/6siOWPcYHM pic.twitter.com/nBxaXV8hAU

“Give me a break,” podcaster Jim Stewartson wrote. “Your video is chock full of white supremacist dogwhistles, imagery of Black people and caricatures of ‘woke leftists’ causing violence while you prance around with angry white men in front of a building infamous for a lynching.

“Your entire video promotes the Jim Crow ‘sundown towns’ where good ole boys made sure no Black people came in and murdered them if they tried it,” he added.

“Where was the tough guy you portray when people were being murdered in Las Vegas and you ran offstage like a child?” he continued. “Spare us your righteous indignation and take your KKK anthem down.”

Lol. I read the lyrics to his song and thought: ohhhh. His next song is gonna be an ode to lynching. Not gonna post the lyrics because ick- but wow. https://t.co/J5ZHVUNXvg

“Yeah, this sounds like: we ARE the law and if we don’t like you, we’re gonna kill you,” Soledad O’Brien wrote.

Again, pretty brutal stuff for Aldean.

But there were others who, apparently, didn’t have an issue with the video or song.

“Great song,” Leo Terrell responded.

They’re mad because Jason isn’t wrong. https://t.co/tvOD1eYX3U
