Born in 1971 in the Bronx, New York, Blige grew up in a notoriously violent and criminal housing project as the child of a single mother. She was raised in extreme poverty, frequently without access to heat or electricity, and she saw her mother be physically abused by several partners. Blige was 𝓈ℯ𝓍ually assaulted as a child by a family acquaintance. Due to the psychological effects of these horrific experiences, she started using drugs and alcohol as a coping method when she was a teenager.

Blige was signed to his inexperienced label in 1989 when he recognized her tremendous potential.

However, Blige’s unadulterated, soulful sound, which combined hip hop, R&B, and gospel, was not well received by the music industry at the time. Record executives advised her to alter her look and voice to conform to popular genres. Blige, however, resisted the urge to fit in, determined to remain true to her artistic vision and genuine self. Her debut album, What’s the 411?, was produced in close collaboration with producer Daryl Simmons and was released in 1992.

In the late 90s, her battles with addiction came to a head. She contemplated suicide but found the will to get sober and seek treatment. This difficult period inspired her 1997 album Share My World, where she candidly addressed recovery on songs like “Love No Limit.”

Through her music, Blige inspired hope in audiences also grappling with inner turmoil. Its success showed Blige’s versatility and ability to evolve her sound while staying grounded in hip hop soul. She followed with diverse albums like 2005’s The Breakthrough, 2008’s Stronger with Each Tear, and 2010’s Stronger, experimenting with different genres yet retaining her signature style.
