Even if Prince Harry mended his relationship with the royal family, it’s likely that Meghan Markle would still be considered ‘persona non grata’ and excluded from royal circles, a former royal butler claims
The royal family are said to ‘harbour twice as much resentment’ for Meghan Markle as they do for Prince Harry, with reports that Meghan might never be able to repair the damage the couple have done.
The Duke and Duchess of Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍 stepped down from the royal family in 2020, and have since made public claims of racism and fallouts after Meghan married into the family in 2020. Their tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and their Netflix series reportedly angered the Royal Family and has left the relationship between the couple and their relatives difficult.
Grant Harrold, King Charles III’s former butler, has revealed that despite Meghan and Harry reportedly trying to heal the royal rift, the Duchess might never be fully accepted back into the fold of the Royal Family. He revealed that she would ‘remain persona non grata’ with the family ‘harbouring resentment’ towards her.

Harrold told the New York Post in a recent interview: “Whatever resentment [the royal family] harbours toward Harry is only half the resentment they harbour toward Meghan. Conversely, Harry is a fierce defender of his wife, and I can’t imagine he’d be willing to resume any royal duties knowing that Meghan remains persona non grata in royal circles.”
The former royal aide added: “Even if Harry wanted to pitch in while his father, the king, is battling cancer and Kate Middleton is temporarily out of commission, Prince William won’t allow it, pure and simple.”
The Duchess of Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍 has endured a tense and strained relationship with the Royal Family, particularly in the wake of her and Prince Harry stepping down as working royals in 2020 and comments she made during their joint tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey. Their Netflix series openly aired their views on the Royal Family and it’s thought to have made the relationship turn more sour, with damage thought to be difficult to repair.

However it is thought both Meghan and Harry have both put out feelers to try and mend the rift in recent weeks, particularly in light of the King’s cancer diagnosis in January. Speaking exclusively to the Mirror, royal expert and author Tom Quinn said: “Meghan doesn’t want to go back to acting, but she’s terrified that if things are not patched up with the Royal Family Harry will cease to be a brand asset and brand Sus𝓈ℯ𝓍 will suffer, so she is putting out feelers now that both Kate and Charles are ill. Underneath the huge ego, Meghan is actually a kind person and she was shocked by Kate’s recent serious operation and Charles’ cancer diagnosis.”
