Prince William and his wife have a total fortune of $50 million – and part of it is for raising Prince George, Princess Charlotte and their third child, Louis Arthur Charles, to adulthood.
CNN said the cost to raise a child to 21 years old in the UK is 323,000 USD. In London, this cost can be up to $354,000. With three children, the total cost is more than $1 million – that’s not including private school or college tuition, which means at least an additional $200,000 per child.
For the royal family, that number is much larger – it is estimated that it will cost them at least $1 million for Prince George alone. So all 3 children will cost about more than 3 million USD.
Here are some of the expenses they will likely have to pay while raising these royal children:
Education: 19,492 USD for Princess Charlotte’s kindergarten tuition, 240,767 USD for Prince George’s 8 years of study at Thomas’s Battersea School in London, 55,772 USD per year if Prince George attends Eton University like his father.
Nanny: From $36,493 to $58,552 for nanny Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, but definitely more than that.
Dress: At least $200,000 per child, and $514 for Prince George’s uniform and accessories.
Delivery costs: Minimum $24,910 for Lindo Wing birth, $2,109 for prenatal care, and $25,500 for medical visits (Figures are totals based on costs for all three royals family).
Baby items: $75 for a christening diaper for all 3 children, at least $480 for 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢 carriers, at least $4,000 for strollers and accessories, and $6,000 for 3 private rooms
Below are the specific costs of raising 3 royal children:
Princess Charlotte started kindergarten in January 2018 at Willcocks Girls’ School, which is very difficult to get into. Parents must pay a non-refundable registration fee of USD 167, which can be paid from the time the child is born. If accepted for an official study place, they must pay a reservation fee of 2,009 USD.
But that’s just the starting point.
Morning tuition for 5 days/week per semester is 4,086 USD (3 semesters is 12,258 USD).
Afternoon tuition (on Monday, Thursday and Friday) is 2,411 USD per term (7,234 USD/3 terms). Charlotte takes full classes both morning and afternoon – that’s 19,492 USD/year.
Willcocks Kindergarten also has a special lunch club with 777 USD/term for each lunch/week or 3 lunches/week for 2,331 USD.
Prince George studies at Montessori Westacre kindergarten, which costs about 46 USD/day.
In September 2017, Prince George (then 4 years old) started attending Thomas’s Battersea School, which costs $23,000 per year.
fee will increase in the third year, when the boy turns 8 years old. If Prince George continues to stay here until the 8th year, when he is 13 years old, the total cost will be 240,767 USD.
The yearly cost of Prince George’s uniform is 456 USD. Accessories (gloves, hat, scarf and jacket) cost an additional $58, meaning the total cost is about $514.
When George turns 13, he will have to decide whether or not to attend Eton like his father and uncle Harry. Tuition per semester here is currently 18,059 USD, which means tuition per year is about 55,954 USD.
Thus, the tuition fee for Prince George alone could be more than 500,000 USD – 32 times the average of 15,667 USD for each child aged 4-6 years studying in London.
Maria Teresa Turrion Borrallo, the royal nanny, graduated from the prestigious Norland University (specializing in training nannies). Graduates of this school can earn up to 58,552 USD/year if working in London, 84,343 if working outside London and up to 145,665 USD if working abroad. Borrallo can earn much more than that by looking after the three royal children and accompanying them on trips and picnics.
The average family in London spends $46,000 on clothing for each child over about 20 years. With three kids, that’s $138,000. William and Kate’s family certainly spent more than that, because the Gieves & Hawkes children’s suit for Prince George alone cost $7,000. With that level of spending, it is estimated that this couple has to spend up to 200,000 USD for each child.
Lindo Wing Hospital, where William and Kate’s three children were born, charges $8,900 for a 24-hour stay in a luxury room and a normal delivery. However, they give a 10% discount to mothers who have given birth there. So the total cost is 24,910 USD for all 3 births.
Kate’s prenatal care costs are estimated at $703 for 3 hours, which means $2,109 for 3 births.
This amount does not include the $8,500 consultation fee for the royal obstetrician and gynecologist. So 3 children will cost 25,500 USD.
The average cost to renovate and decorate a child’s room is 2000 USD, but that is for a normal family. William’s chest of drawers as a child cost $2,880. Kate bought a Wicker Moses crib ($297) before giving birth to Prince George, as well as a few cribs (the cheapest is $82).
If the royal family regularly visits Kate’s parents in the village of Bucklebury, the cost of personal security could be huge, but it was not disclosed.
