Anthony Joshua hesitant for son to follow in his footsteps as boxer as he considers other ‘opportunities’

Anthony Joshua has admitted he’s wary of his son following in his footsteps as a boxer, considering the other opportunities out there.

The former heavyweight champion is taking on Jermaine Franklin this weekend, and elsewhere spoke about rumours he’ll be retiring if he loses.

But, he addressed the speculation on Wednesday’s Good Morning Britain with Martin Lewis and Susanna Reid.

‘I keep on getting asked that question, like if you lose are you going to retire, sometimes I just feel like I’m not going to debate with people, so I’m just like, “Yeah I’ll retire if I lose”,’ he said.

‘I just give them what they want to hear, so I’m not going to debate with people time and time again about the decisions I can make about my career.’

Elsewhere, he spoke about his five-year-old son following in his footsteps.

AJ, who shares son Joseph ‘JJ’ with ex-girlfriend Nicole Osbourne, said: ‘I’ve always wondered this, ideally I look around all these lovely areas when I rent an AirBNB and I’m in a nice area, and I think to myself, majority of these people that live in these areas are businesspeople, they’re not athletes.

‘There’s probably two or three athletes, so if Iwant him to be successful i’d probably say, have a good education.

‘Boxing is tough, sports is tough, not everyone makes it. I’m one out of how many people that I’ve met along my journey.

‘So I’m one, but successful businesspeople there’s so many opportunities, there’s so many ladders they can sit on.

‘And as I said, a lot of successful people live in these wealthy areas, so hopefully he’ll focus on his books.’

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1.
