Aaron Rodgers thought his playing career might be over after tearing his Achilles tendon

I was really thinking, ‘This is it. You don’t come back from this injury,'” shared the 40-year-old quarterback during a comprehensive 2 1/2-hour interview on the “I Can Fly” podcast, released Tuesday.

Reflecting on his experience, Rodgers expressed the profound disappointment of having an exhilarating offseason in a new city with fresh teammates, only for it to abruptly end after four plays.

He described it as “one of the most heartbreaking nights” of his life, underscoring the challenge of overcoming his ego in such circumstances.

Seeking solace and inspiration, Rodgers delved into research about Kobe Bryant‘s recovery from a similar injury during his time with the Los Angeles Lakers, which helped alleviate the initial despair about his own career prospects.

The seasoned quarterback also opened up about his emotional plea to close friends for support during his rehabilitation journey.

“I need help. This is going to be really hard,” he admitted.

Was surgery a success?

Following surgery the next day, Rodgers embarked on an intensive rehabilitation regimen supported by prayer, dietary adjustments, and unwavering camaraderie from his inner circle.

While determined to return to the field before the regular season’s end if the Jets remained in playoff contention, Rodgers ultimately halted his comeback attempt in January due to lingering recovery issues and the team’s postseason elimination.

Looking ahead, Jets coach Robert Saleh confirmed Rodgers’ progress toward participating in voluntary organized team activities next month, signaling optimism about his return to action.

Rodgers conveyed his eagerness to resume playing, emphasizing his love for the game and his yearning to compete on the field, which he considers his “happy place”. Expressing gratitude for personal growth amid adversity, Rodgers reflected on the transformative journey since his injury and underscored the lessons learned.

“With a lot changing for the better in my life since that heartbreaking moment in the Jets locker room, I can’t help but feel grateful to the universe for all the beauty that has unfolded in the last six months,” concluded Rodgers.
