Jay-Z has revealed the adorable true story behind his daughter Blue Ivy’s name after years of speculation.
The legendry rapper, 53, who also shares six-year-old twins Sir and Rumi with Drunk In Love songstress Beyoncé, 42, had, until now, remained tight-lipped over his 11-year-old’s moniker.
While many had assumed ‘Blue’ could be the power couple’s favorite color, Jay-Z told Gayle King, 68, that it is actually derived from a nickname they used for their unborn daughter from her first sonogram.
‘Her name was supposed to be Brooklyn, that was the name we had in theory,’ the artist began.

Her unique moniker was inspired after the rapper and wife Beyoncé referred to her as a ‘little blueberry’ for nine months throughout the pregnancy
‘But when we got to the sonograms, we was calling her Blueberry, like, “Look at the little blueberry”. You know, it was like a nickname.
‘For nine months, we were like, “Look at the little blueberry”. So, it just was natural. We just took the “berry” off of it and called her Blue.’
Besides sharing the wholesome origin of Blue Ivy’s name, Jay-Z also admitted that his daughter now sees him as a ‘cool dad’ and comes to him and mom Beyoncé for advice.
‘She used to be frontin’ on me a little bit,’ he told Gayle with a huge smile. ‘But [now] I catch her. I catch her in the corner, you know? Now she asks me if this is cool, if her sneakers [are cool].’
Gayle chimed in to clarify that she wants her father’s ‘advice’, to which Jay-Z responded: ‘Yeah, yeah, yeah.’
‘There was a time where she was like, “Daaaaad,”‘ he continued, doing an impression of Blue Ivy covering her face in embarrassment.
‘I’m cool. I don’t know what you sayin’,’ he hilariously recalled telling Blue. ‘I’m cool! You got cool parents! At your house, your parents are cool.’
Blue’s fame reached stratospheric heights over the summer when she performed alongside her mom during her Renaissance Tour.
