Pittsburgh Steelers’ Russell Wilson Sounds off on Justin Fields Amid QB Battle

Pittsburgh Steelers’ Russell Wilson opened up about Justin Fields during OTAs.

While the expectation is that Russell Wilson will be the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback under center in Week 1 against the Houston Texans, it hasn’t stopped Justin Fields from competing.

Both quarterbacks spoke with the media during a recent OTAs session and discussed the topic, as ESPN’s Brooke Pryor detailed.

Wilson addressed the topic while explaining how he and Fields are “challenging one another” to be the best version they can be.

Russell Wilson is expected to be the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Week 1 starting quarterback.

“Every day I’m trying to be my best so I can also show him and vice-versa. And we’re just continuing to challenge one another and be the best version we can be for this football team, and that’s the great part about it,” Wilson explained.

Fields gave an extremely candid response on the topic, and while he had praise for his fellow quarterback in Wilson, the former Chicago Bears signal-caller also said he’s “definitely competing.”

“I’m definitely competing, I think Russ knows that,” Fields said. “We’re competing against each other every day. Him being out there for me that helps me getting better, us pushing each other. I mean definitely don’t have the mindset of me just sitting all year.”

It’s a unique situation for the Steelers, as both quarterbacks have shown tremendous upside in their careers. But things didn’t pan out with Wilson and the Broncos after he signed a massive contract extension, so he’ll look to make a mark in Pittsburgh now.

As for Fields, there was much debate last season about whether the Bears would keep him as their starting quarterback or opt for a change. However, once they secured the No. 1 pick and former USC QB Caleb Williams, it led to Fields being traded.

The Steelers acquired Fields for a 2025 sixth-round pick who could become a fourth-rounder based on playing time.

As OTAs roll on and training camp gets underway, don’t be surprised if we hear a lot more about the battle between Wilson and Fields.
