Liberty Guard Drops Blunt Admission About Stopping Fever Star Caitlin Clark
New York Liberty guard Betnijah Laney-Hamilton played a huge part in the team’s 104-68 blowout of the Indiana Fever on Sunday. Aside from dropping a team-high 20 points, her defense on Caitlin Clark was also pivotal in making sure the visitors were no match for them.
Clark played unarguably the worst game of her pro career against the Liberty, as she finished with just three points on 1-of-10 shooting while being primarily guarded by Laney-Hamilton.
Speaking to reporters postgame, the 30-year-old vet opened up about guarding Clark and the preparation she did knowing that she’d be getting the defensive assignment on the sharpshooter.
Laney-Hamilton admitted that guarding a player like Clark is like a “chess match,” so she had to study her tendencies really well and gear up mentally for the challenge.
“It’s a chess match. Each player I defend is different, preparing for them learning their tendencies…I’m always having to do it, so I’m always ready, prepared for that moment,” Laney-Hamilton explained, via Myles Ehrlich.
Liberty head coach Sandy Brondello, for her part, was really satisfied with Betnijah Laney-Hamilton’s defensive performance against Caitlin Clark. More than that, though, she also gave credit for the veteran guard on making big-time plays on offense.
“Extremely proud of her every day. She guards the best player on the team every single game. Really proud of that, and she found a great rhythm on the offensive end… and made big play after big play,” Brondello added.

Clark was averaging 16.9 points entering the Sunday contest while shooting 37.6 percent from the field. She’s a dangerous scorer when she gets hot, but unfortunately for her, Laney-Hamilton and the Liberty didn’t give her the opportunity to find her rhythm at all.
Props should definitely be given to the Liberty for preparing well on guarding Clark.

In that game, she finished with 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists, showing why she was the No. 1 overall pick.
