Eat like a King! Camilla tucked into ice cream, Prince William served burgers out of a van and Kate tried local food in the Bahamas… but Charles said no to insect cake

During her trip to Jersey last month with King Charles, Queen Camilla tucked into a small tub of ice cream.

Her Majesty enjoyed the sweet treat before she had to be whisked away due to a security scare that turned out to be a false alarm.

It was far from the first time that the royals have tucked into food – or helped with serving it – during engagements.

Prince William has previously served vegetarian burgers out of a van and also answered the phone at an Indian restaurant.

The Princess of Wales showed off her pancake flipping s𝓀𝒾𝓁𝓁s in Slough and even tasted a food dubbed ‘nature’s Viagra’ when in the Bahamas.

As for Charles, he once turned down a slice of cake that contained insects.

Will speaking, table for two?

During a visit to an Indian restaurant in Birmingham with Kate last year, Prince William picked up the phone to a potential diner.

The phone rang unexpectedly while the pair were trying a range of dishes at the family-run Indian Streatery.

The Prince of Wales answered the call after asking: ‘Should I take the order?’

William had a friendly chat with the future customer and then asked the restaurant staff: ‘Do we have a seat for two right now?’

‘Half past two?’ he suggested. ‘Does that work for you? No, apparently not right now.

‘You’ve got a train at 3? If you could get in at half past two that would be fine. For two people? Maybe a quarter past two, and you could make the train at three?’

Even though William gave the wrong street name, the diner, Vinay Aggarwal and his wife Ankita Gulati, managed find the venue and were surprised to discover they had been talking to Prince William.

Shocked diners stare in surprise when they realise they are being served by a prince

Taking a table reservation isn’t the only time William has tried out a customer service role.

Last year the Prince of Wales served customers during an event with YouTube channel Sorted Food to spotlight the work of three wnners of his Earthshot Prize.

William, dressed in a pale blue shirt, was inside the food van in central London and turned to pass some burgers over the counter.

One diner was so shocked she put her hand to her mouth when she recognised the Prince, while others stared in surprise.

The partnership saw them develop the Earthshot Burger – which was made using Kheyti greenhouse vegetables, cooked on a cleaner-burning portable stove, and presented in a biodegradable box.

The princess burst into laughter after attempting to flip the treat and then said: ‘Definitely don’t eat this one.’

Two care home residents watched on as Kate placed her pancake next to two others made by the head chef and added: ‘All the ones made earlier are much nicer’.

The royal, who wore a floral face mask once inside the care home, also met with staff and residents.

The local delicacy is from inside of the conch and is commonly said to be its male genitalia genitals.

Before taking a bite, the princess said: I’m a little bit more adventurous than William is.’ As the pair joked around, he said: ‘I can handle it.’

She then helped a stall owner prepare a conch salad before she and William tried some, calling it ‘delicious’.

Prince William was also keen to try the local drink and stopped at a bar where he was offered a Gully Wash – made from coconut juice with condensed milk.

The event was designed to encourage communities around the world to make friends and meet their neighbours over a meal together.

They put garnishes on the dishes being prepared in the kitchen before they were taken out for locals to eat.

However, he politely turned it down after the then Prince of Wales discovered it also contained ants.

He laughed at the discovery and said: ‘Insects?!’

Charles was attending a festival designed to showcase the finest food and crafts of the area.

Though he declined the insect cake, Charles did try other treats, including a fruit juice, while Camilla enjoyed a glass of local sparkling wine.
