Anthony Joshua’s hopes of a rematch against Daniel Dubois could be on the ropes two days after he was knocked out at Wembley.

Anthony Joshua‘s hopes of a rematch against Daniel Dubois could be on the ropes two days after he was knocked out at Wembley.

AJ’s promoter Eddie Hearn insisted there is a rematch clause and that his fighter was likely to activate it in the aftermath of his Saturday shellacking.

Dubois retained his IBF world heavyweight crown with a bullying performance in front of 96,000 fans as he floored Joshua four times, knocking him out in the fifth round.

Joshua has previously had double-headers against Andy Ruiz Jr. and Oleksandr Usyk, getting his own back against the former after a shock defeat in 2019.

However, Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren has flung a spanner in the works with a potentially game-changing claim about the fight contract.

Anthony Joshua has been handed a major blow in his hopes for a rematch with Daniel Dubois

Dubois’ promoter Frank Warren says his fighter does not have a guaranteed rematch clause

The 27-year-old knocked AJ out in the fifth round with his fourth knockdown on Saturday

Despite being unfancied by many, he retained his IBF world heavyweight title at Wembley

He told talkSPORT that Dubois does not have a guaranteed rematch clause in his contract, even though AJ apparently does.

In any case, he said that his camp would be open to discussing a second fight between the boxers.

Joshua is no quitter and has a dream of joining the gilded hall of three-time champions so is expected to seek a solution wherever it takes him.

As he said in the ring moments after his defeat: ‘I’m always saying to myself I’m a fighter for life… we keep rolling the dice.

‘I had a sharp opponent, a fast opponent and a lot of mistakes from my end, but that’s the game.’

And promoter Hearn told DAZN: ‘I’m sure he’ll exercise that rematch clause, I think that’s a given. He’ll need a rest and it’s a dangerous fight. This guy’s growing in confidence all the time.

‘He’ll believe he can hurt Dubois. He’ll believe he can beat him, but full credit to Daniel Dubois, he deserves all the credit tonight. It was a great performance from Daniel.’

Dubois shocked the world on Saturday evening. He went against tradition and emerged out into Wembley Stadium first despite being the reigning champion – but that was the least of the surprises in store.

Eddie Hearn has insisted that Joshua does have a rematch clause and wants to activate it

Joshua harbours ambitions of being a three-time world champion like Muhammad Ali and Lennox Lewis

He hurt Dubois a couple of times but for the most part took a pummelling in front of 96,000

In the end, trainer Ben Davison threw in the towel and rushed into the ring as it was waved off

After the fight, Dubois insisted that he still hasn’t ‘reached my potential’ in the boxing game

From the opening bell he showcased his immense power and scored a huge knockdown in the opening round.

A stunned AJ returned to his corner to seek the guidance of trainer Ben Davison and, in the second round, he did manage to hang on as ‘Dynamite’ Dubois pushed forward.

However, Joshua never looked as though he’d fully recovered from the early blow and was on the canvas once again in the third round, seconds before the bell rang.

It didn’t take long for ‘AJ’ to be sent down to the canvas again as, in the fourth round, Dubois connected with another huge hook that had Joshua’s corner concerned.

Somehow, the 34-year-old managed to get to his feet once more and marched forward, despite the heavy blows he’d taken in the opening rounds.

However, it was all in the fifth after Joshua caught Dubois and charged forward before the IBF heavyweight champion delivered a brilliant counter right-hook that sent his rival to the canvas.

Joshua attempted to get back to his feet for the fourth time in the fight but stumbled over, almost landing on his head, and gave the referee a simple decision to call off the bout.

Tyson Fury’s Epic Meltdown: ‘FKING TOSSER!’ – IBF Rankings and Joshua-Usyk Rematch Slammed!

Tyson Fury, the reigning heavyweight champion, recently voiced his frustrations regarding the International Boxing Federation (IBF) and the current state of boxing during an interview in London. Known for his candidness, Fury did not hold back in expressing his displeasure over the IBF’s ranking decisions and what he perceives as bias against him. In a lively exchange with journalist Charlie Parsons, Fury reflected on his preparation for his upcoming fight, emphasizing his dedication to the sport and his ongoing passion for boxing. He mentioned that if others were compensated as handsomely as he is, they too would find inspiration in the sport. However, Fury’s focus quickly turned to the IBF, which he criticized for their questionable rankings, particularly their decision to place him outside the top 15 after he had just paid a substantial fee to compete for their title. Fury’s frustration was palpable as he referred to the IBF’s belt as “a piece of sh*t” and expressed his disdain for the organization, stating he would “piss on it” when he got home. He took aim at Daryl Peoples, a judge he believes is not fit to officiate significant bouts, suggesting that the judging system in boxing is flawed, particularly when it comes to his fights. Despite his strong feelings regarding the IBF, he acknowledged that he had no loss of faith in the judges, who he deemed competent. As he prepares for a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk, Fury indicated that he plans to approach the fight with a renewed focus, aiming to avoid complacency. He admitted that in their previous encounter, he may have underestimated Usyk’s abilities, engaging in what he called “clowning around” during the match. Fury’s goal for the upcoming bout is to assert himself with more concentration and less showboating. The conversation also touched upon the future of heavyweight boxing, including the potential for a rematch between Anthony Joshua and Usyk. Fury, who has previously clashed with Joshua, expressed skepticism about Joshua’s chances of winning should a rematch take place. He suggested that if Joshua continues to face defeats, the prospect of their fight, which once promised to be a blockbuster event, may not hold the same allure. Fury concluded the interview by discussing his holiday plans, humorously noting that he would indulge in festive feasting and then work to shed the extra weight come January. The heavyweight champion remains optimistic about his future in boxing, hinting at the possibility of a trilogy fight with Usyk. As Fury gears up for his next challenge, his passion for the sport and his determination to reclaim his status remain evident, ensuring that fans will be eagerly awaiting the December 21st showdown.

In a candid update, Joshua emphasized his status as a legitimate world champion and called for respect for his achievements in the ring. The injury reportedly occurred during the second round of the bout, where Joshua was caught with a powerful shot that caused him to wobble and subsequently trip multiple times. This incident raised concerns about his physical condition, but the specific nature of his injuries remained unclear until now. Sources close to Joshua’s camp have confirmed that he is dealing with a sprained ankle. Although there were hints of other injuries, the ankle has emerged as the primary concern. Observers of the fight noted that Joshua’s balance seemed compromised, which may have been exacerbated by the adrenaline rush that athletes often experience during competition. The news comes at a crucial time for Joshua, who has been navigating a challenging phase in his boxing career. With the pressure mounting for a comeback, the revelation of this injury adds another layer of complexity to his journey. While the specifics of his recovery timeline are yet to be disclosed, boxing enthusiasts and analysts alike are eager to see how this will impact his future fights. As the boxing world awaits further updates, fans are left with a mixture of concern and anticipation for Joshua’s return to form. The emphasis on respect for his achievements serves as a reminder of his status within the heavyweight division, even as he grapples with the physical toll of the sport. Joshua’s resilience and determination have always been hallmarks of his career, and this latest challenge will undoubtedly test those qualities once again. As he navigates the recovery process, the boxing community remains hopeful for his swift return to the ring, ready to reclaim his position among the elite in the heavyweight class.
