Sister Sage, played by Susan Heyward in The Boys, talks about her character’s Phase Two ambitions.
At the end of The Boys season 4, Sage reminds Homelander that he now controls the United States through the newly appointed President Calhoun and tells him to be ready for Phase Two. The details of Sage’s grand scheme are unknown, however Phase Two will be implemented in Season 5 after Phase One was completed in Season 4.
In an interview with TVLine, Heyward discussed a number of potential Phase Two scenarios based on her portrayal of Sage in Season 4 and the character’s current revelations. This covers a wide range of potential roles that Sage could perform in season five. Heyward disclosed, however, that she is currently only speculating and does not yet know what showrunner Eric Kripke and the writers have in store. See the remarks made by Heyward below:
In a very Sage-like way, I have all of these different versions in my head. I have the version in my head where she goes for world domination. I have the version in my head where she flips and shows herself to be a champion of humanity, and she’s been just positioning herself to protect humanity this whole time. I have a version in my head where she’s a complete agent of chaos and just likes to keep pushing the table over. All of those sound fun to me as an actress. I’m open to all of them. But the writers’ room is open right now. I will find out probably when I arrive to set, and things will probably change again then. So I guess the answer to your question is, I hope it will reflect the world back to itself, clearly, and I know it’s going to be fun to play. I’m grateful.
What Are Sage’s Intentions For Phase Two?
She Is Unlikely To Reveal Herself As Humanity’s Saving Grace
“Phase Two will more likely see Sage continuing down the path of global domination or simply being an agent of chaos as she uses her unparalleled intelligence to make the world suffer.”
Sage is probably an even more interesting character than Homelander, whose evil aim has always been obvious, because of the ambiguity surrounding her future plans and ultimate goal.Using Homelander, the other Seven, the Boys, and everyone else as pieces that she carefully shifted about to test her theories and see if she could change the universe to suit her wishes, Sage approached Phase One like a game. As her theories continue to be realized on a worldwide scale, she will continue to wield Homelander as a weapon to inflict suffering on humanity if this trend persists.
Heyward’s notion that Sage may be playing a long game to defend or promote mankind is interesting, and it would be delightful to watch her pull the rug out from under Homelander’s feet when he believes he has reached the peak of his power and accomplished all he ever desired. Sage has never expressed a desire for public attention or favor, nor has she shown compassion for the masses. It would be an unexpected storyline development, yet it would be inconsistent with the character’s established arc in season 4.
In Phase Two, Sage will undoubtedly continue her path to global supremacy, or she might just be a force for chaos, utilizing her extraordinary knowledge to harm the planet. In Season 5, the Boys are outmatched since they are unable to outsmart Sage and overcome Homelander. In order to combat Sage and the dangers of Phase Two, the titular gang will need more than Billy Butcher’s newfound abilities as The Boys draws to a close.
