Serena Williams Didn’t Expect to Be Pregnant. And We Can Understand Why…

Tennis star reveals she had bleeding during pregnancy. How is this possible?

Pregnant, you thought you could finally escape the period that arrives every month without warning? Bleeding can start even when you are expecting a 𝚋𝚊𝚋𝚢. This is the case of Serena Williams , who discovered almost by surprise that she was pregnant . The young mother of a little Alexis Olympia told InStyle magazine that she had a menstrual cycle just before taking her pregnancy test. The tennis star was therefore surprised by the positive result that appeared . She therefore rushed to consult her doctor who told her that she was  pregnant . But how can such a phenomenon be explained?

One in four women affected…

About one in four women bleeds during the first trimester of pregnancy, according to a 2010 paper by the American College of Epidemiology . However, it is nothing like a real period, which is due to the discharge of the superficial layer of the mucous membrane! The bleeding is lighter,  lasts less time, and is usually not accompanied by any pain. ”  Unlike menstruation, which can release up to 12 teaspoons of blood over three to five days, pregnancy bleeding usually lasts less than three days  ,” the report states.

Bleeding is not a cause for alarm at all, according to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, which says: ” Although bleeding during the first trimester could be a sign of danger, such as miscarriage or an ectopic pregnancy that occurs when the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, it is not always a cause for concern.” In fact, only 12% of women who experience bleeding during pregnancy experience a miscarriage .

In some women, hormones can cause bleeding on the expected date of the period in the first few months without any consequences on the proper progress of the pregnancy: this is called anniversary periods  ! “If you bleed one to two weeks after conception, it may be due to the implantation of the egg in the lining of the uterus. The cervix also develops more blood vessels during pregnancy and bleeds more easily after 𝓈ℯ𝓍ual intercourse or a pelvic exam,” explains Cosmopolitan . The woman who had confided in us about her complicated delivery misinterpreted this symptom, which fortunately is not serious  !

In any case, if you have bleeding during your pregnancy , consult your doctor immediately.
