‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ First Trailer: Ryan Reynolds Shakes Up Multiverse With Hugh Jackman

Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool is promising to wreck Marvel Studios’ “little cinematic universe” alongside Hugh Jackman in the first trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine.

During Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday, Marvel released a brand new look at the highly anticipated third installment in the Deadpool franchise, the first since the character was acquired from Fox by Disney. The two-and-a-half-minute trailer shows Reynolds’ Wade Wilson and his signature meta-humor, calling out the jump from Fox to Disney in a fourth-wall-breaking moment as he is abducted by the Time Variance Authority (TVA), a Marvel organization first introduced in the Disney+ Loki series.

The NSFW trailer prominently features recent Emmy winner Matthew McFadyen who appears to be at the helm of the TVA and propositioning Reynolds’ character into becoming a hero of the multiverse, which Deadpool appears to accept as he watches snippets from other Marvel films, including Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger.

“Your little cinematic universe is about to change,” Reynolds says in the clip as he suits up in the classic red and black Deadpool suit. “I am the messiah. I am Marvel Jesus.”

The trailer does not show Jackman’s face in his return as Wolverine but does show Wade approaching him from behind in a casino and engaged in a battle toward the end of the video. The promo ends with Wolverine — seen in a comic-accurate yellow and blue suit — approaching Deadpool to help him, which the former character quickly refuses.

“Don’t just stand there, you ape. Give me a hand,” he says as Wolverine’s shadow looms over him on the ground, showing him extending the claws from his hand. “Nope, I’m actually OK. Thank you very much.”

Marvel Studios also debuted a brand-new poster for the film alongside the trailer, which shows a heart friendship necklace split in two with Deadpool’s mask on one side and Wolverine’s on the other. The message on the necklace reads “best friends” while the poster’s message says “come together.”

Following the release of the trailer and poster on Sunday, Jackman added his own spin on the film’s new name, updating it to more closely align with the playfully antagonistic relationship he has with his good friend and co-star.

Jackman posted an upgraded title card for the new film, this one reading “Wolverine & A**hole,” a title he found to be more apt for the forthcoming film.

In the comments, Reynolds responded to the post by telling The Greatest Showman star that they still have a long time before the movie comes out, seemingly referencing the press tour they will embark on together for the next five months

“Pump the brakes. It’s a long road to July, Peanut,” the Free Guy actor wrote.

Reynolds also made his own Instagram post in response to the trailer’s drop, using social media to ask if any of his more than 50 million followers had watched it yet.

“Has everyone seen the #Deadpool trailer?” he wrote alongside a photo of himself in front of a TV screen playing the promo.

“Also has anyone seen my wife?” Reynolds joked, addressing wife Blake Lively’s presence at Super Bowl LVIII with Taylor Swift.

The film is directed by Shawn Levy and also stars Deadpool newcomer Emma Corrin, as well as returning stars Morena Baccarin, Rob Delaney, Leslie Uggams and Karan Soni.

Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters July 26.
